I’m a mother of 4 month old Boy, and have heard conflicting information about Cloth Diapers and diaper Rash. Does anyone have experience about preventing diaper rash, and could cloth diapers actually help prevent rash? Do you have any covers/diapers that you prefer?
So far we haven’t had a rash with disposables, and even though I would really like to change to cloth diapers, I certainly don’t want to create a problem where none exists.

I don’t think switching to cloth diapers would solve your problem it could even make it worse. Diposable diapers are designed to breath and to keep moisture away from your child’s skin. Your best bet for curing/preventing bad diaper rash is to make sure your child’s bum and crotch are completely dry after tubby, by this I mean use a blow dryer on the cool setting. Then use corn starch on the affected area and in the diaper. A bad rash should clear up in a day or two. We give tubby every other day and in between use a baby powder with corn starch. Works like a charm. Keep it clean, dry and don’t get booged down with all these fancy balms.

My baby is almost 7 months old and has been in cloth diapers since she was 2 weeks old. She has had one case of diaper rash so far, and that was my fault…I forgot she had a dirty diaper and left her in it too long. I don’t have a service, I wash them myself and it has been really easy and convenient. We use Bum Genius and don’t have a problem with leaks.

I have 3 children who all wore cloth, and a 4th one on the way with whom I intend to use cloth. My children did not have rashes because I promptly changed their diapers. Many people who use disposables are often not aware that their children have wet their diapers until they’ve done so several times. With cloth – it is evident. I used Tiny Tots Diaper Service in the Bay area. They drop off clean diapers (and diaper covers if you buy) and pick up soiled diapers every week – providing a hamper for the soiled diapers. It actually doesn’t stink with the deodorizer and as poops get more solid with age, I just flicked them into the toilet and put the cloth diaper in the hamper.

I used the service for potty training too. They provide the training pants every week. It was awesome – I didn’t have to wash all the pee pee accident undies !

When any of my children had a rash – it was seldom, I used A&D ointment (NOT cream). The cream is too hard to wipe off. I still keep A&D ointment in my hope for many, many reasons.
